Artist Biography

Hugh was born on January 5th, 1944 in Memel now a city of Lithuania called Klaipeida. Memel was a city state that ceased to exist after it was taken over by the Russians at the end of WW2.

He came to Australia with his Grandfather in 1949 following his parents who arrived two years earlier.

The family lived in Newcastle where he went to school. His early years at school showed he had potential as an artist and won several awards including the Newcastle Art Show for his age group. When he left school he joined Newcastle Art Service which employed three commercial artists. It was a highly coveted position that was linked to the only Advertising Agency in the city. This was the time when there were no computers or graphic artists. It was a demanding job that had no room for errors and all art work was linked to publication deadlines.
Hugh moved to sydney and in 1968 he married Dianne. He imersed himself in the corporate world and continued to paint to supplement his income. In the same year they had their son Mark. In 1973 they had their daughter Jade and in 1975 their daughter Amber. The family lived in Glebe until 1988 when they moved to Perth. Their son Mark stayed behind in Sydney where he was employed in the IT industry. As he rose into more senior management positions Hugh had less time to paint and it wasn’t untill March 2008 that he was able to resume his paintinhg in a full time capacity. This catalogue represents his first major collection.

PORTRAITS & COMMISSIONS

Hugh will use a style that he feels will best capture the essence of his subject. Although he likes to meet with his subject it is not essential as he will paint off a photograph if need be. Where possible he will make sketches and take his own photographs. Some are able to sit for him but it is not essential. He tries to capture the essence of his subject from whichever source is available. There are no hard and fast rules as to how he will proceeed with a portrait as each portrait is a personal experience for both the subject and himself. One size does not fit all. On all subjects except portraits he will if possible refund the payment from the public sale of the painting if the client does not like the finished artwork. Below are some examples of Hugh's portraits.
